Concentrations (Areas of Study)

Family and Community Health:

The health and well-being of individuals depend heavily on their families and the communities where they live. The family unit continues to evolve. Single parenthood is rising, gender roles are transforming and recognition of same-sex couples is growing. Meanwhile, racial and economic disparities are challenging governments, health systems, schools and other institutions that serve our communities. However, these changes and challenges present opportunities to address important population health issues. Students pursuing the Family and Community Health Concentration will gain an understanding of the dynamics of these institutions and settings, approaches to asses them, methods to promote health, and skills to evaluate programs. Students pursuing the Family and Community Health concentration will gain an understanding of the dynamics of community institutions and settings, approaches to assess them, methods to promote health, and skills to evaluate programs.

The Family and Community Health concentration are available to students in all three program tracks and delivery methods.

Health Statistics:

Advances in data acquisition and storage have led to the availability of vast quantities of data. This information can provide the basis for sound decision-making and policy development, but this requires knowledge of the theory and practice of statistical analyses. Additionally, there is a growing demand for professionals trained to manage and interpret large databases and to advance information technology. Health Statistics involves the compilation, analysis, and interpretation of statistical information to guide Public Health policies and interventions to improve the population’s health. Professionals in this field work with data collection programs, needs assessment, survey planning, identifying health trends and emerging health issues.

The Health Statistics concentration is available to students in all three program tracks but only to those in the residential and hybrid delivery methods.

Environmental Health:

Rapid, dramatic increases in the global population, urbanization and wealth/resource disparities have created unprecedented challenges to public health. Ensuring that needs for food, water, shelter, and transportation are met while protecting and preserving natural resources requires thoughtful and bold action. Environmental Health professionals assess and try to understand the role environmental factors play to the population’s health. Students pursuing the Environmental Health concentration will receive training in environmental sciences, as well as in occupational, radiological and toxicological sciences.

The Environmental Health concentration is available to students in all three program tracks but only to those in the residential and hybrid delivery methods.

Delivery Methods:

Residential

Residential MPH. The residential MPH degree is designed to be flexible and tailored to students’ interests. Students can obtain an MPH degree in one of three concentrations. All courses are offered on Purdue West Lafayette campus.

Hybrid Programs

Hybrid MPH. The hybrid MPH degree offers residential students additional flexibility in course selection and scheduling. Students in the hybrid program can enroll in a minimum of 25% and a maximum of 45% of their credit hours into online courses. The curriculum of the hybrid program includes courses from both the residential and online programs.

Online/Distance Programs

Online MPH. The online MPH degree offers fulltime professionals and students unable to attend courses on campus an opportunity to obtain a Master of Public Health degree. The program is designed to meet the same standards as the residential program. It is entirely asynchronous, and students typically take courses one at a time in 8-week blocks. Online students obtain an MPH in the Family and Community Health concentration.
