Master’s and Ph.D. Programs

Overall -  Purdue’s Hospitality and Tourism Management research-based graduate programs lead to a master of science or doctor of philosophy degrees. These highly customized programs allow students to select courses in individual areas of interest including food science, foods and nutrition, consumer affairs, engineering, education, industrial management, community planning, and others. This broad access to coursework combined with our support for individualized programs is designed to meet the needs of the mature student who has well-defined career goals.

Ph.D. - The Ph.D. program is designed to be one of the strongest research-based programs in the world. The program, which includes a strong element of statistics and research design, prepares students for careers in major research universities or research-based agencies. Upon graduation, students are expected to have a curriculum vitae which includes teaching experience, publishing experience in research journals, and a record of presentations to industry and research societies. The program has a limited enrollment to allow for exceptionally close working relationships between faculty and individual students.

MS (residential) - The master of science degree allows students to fully specialize and includes significant exposure to research. Students are provided with a full set of skills allowing for a successful career in chosen fields of specialization, including strong preparation for entry into Ph.D. programs. Students then specialize in their area of interest through a variety of elective choices and research projects, culminating in a required thesis project. Numerous opportunities exist for students to work one-on-one with faculty developing, conducting, and analyzing research dealing with real problems and important issues in the hospitality industry. Most full-time students complete the program in two years if no prerequisites were required.

MS (online) - The online master of science degree is a business-focused hospitality degree designed to help managers with HTM industry experience rise to new levels. It provides the executive management, leadership and analytical skills you need to advance your career within the industry. Whether you’d like to further your management career in the restaurant industry, work within more complex, full-service hotels, or transfer to the corporate side of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM), our program is known for developing global leaders and will equip you to meet the bigger challenges and opportunities presented.

Research-based graduate programs lead to a Master’s of Science or Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

There are both a Non-Thesis option, which meets the needs of those wishing to earn a Master’s Degree and return to the industry with no intention of pursuing a Ph.D. program and Thesis option for those wishing to pursue a Ph.D. in their future. Ph.D. applicants must already hold a master’s degree, HTM does not offer a program where a masters is earned on the way towards a doctorate.  HTM normally does not approve part-time study or research done away from the campus.

Concentrations (Areas of Study):

The school’s three research centers in foodservice, lodging, and tourism. As part of a major research university, we are able to offer qualified students access to courses in individual areas of interest including food science, foods and nutrition, consumer affairs, engineering, education, industrial management, community planning, and others.

Online/Distance Programs:

HTM offers a Master’s of Science Online program. This program is a business-focused hospitality degree designed to help managers with HTM industry experience rise to new levels. It is open to domestic students and tailored specifically to HTM managers with five years of professional experience and a minimum of three years of management experience.
